Jack and the Marching Band

Last night was Jack's first public appearance with the El Toro High School Marching Band! After two
weeks of intense band camp they held a Friday night parent preview performance and potluck.  Per tradition,  all of the groups dressed up and performed in costume!  There were mimes and hospital patients, babies and super heroes, plenty of Disney characters and one group even dressed up as phone apps.  So clever and cute! Jack's group dressed up as Star Wars characters.  Jack was Yoda, but sadly without his mask which he didn't wear during the performance, he was a bit harder to identify.   With his baggy clothes and rope belt, someone even asked me afterwards if he was supposed to be Tom Sawyer!  But I can say he really enjoyed his first performance.  He has started out on the cymbals for his freshman year, with other opportunities opening up in the winter and as other percussion players age out.  But he had so much fun with the formation and I have to say he absolutely nailed it!!  Already we can tell that this is a great group for him to be involved with.  And I have to say that Marching Band is wonderfully such a nerd-sport.  The kids are nerdy, the parents are nerdy, everyone is so friendly and accepting. I just smile now thinking of the juxtaposition of the Football Team playing its game, then the Marching Band entering at halftime and taking the field (and in my perception, stealing the show!)

Can't wait for the season to begin!!

But for now here are some photos and two videos of the performance last night.  I will do my best to videotape all of the performances, so everyone who can't come see Jack in person will get to see
what he's been up to.  Several of you have helped support Jack financially and made it possible
for him to be involved in Marching Band.  Thank you so much and please enjoy the show!

This first video is the performance of marching
in place, not in formation. There is a lot more close up
footage of Jack in cymbal action on this one.

The beginning with the Batman salute is awesome!

Great job Jack and ETHSMB!
Looking forward to many more Friday nights together!

Yay Jack! Being a part of a group like this in high school can make it so much more fun. I hope he continues to enjoy it!

Also, was that a really loud metronome or some part of the percussion section in the videos?

Yes, that was a loud metronome the band used. At the beginning you hear Batman call over to Robin "Metronome" and Robin (exactly opposite facing Batman) leans down and turns it on. Jack told me they don't use it in competition.
