just a few things

The last Wednesday of every month is when our book club meets. Last night was my turn to host and lead the discussion. My selection was A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute. I had read the book years ago when I lived in New York, and at one point when I was reading it on the subway and reached a certain plot point, I said "no!" and started to cry. (so unlike me) At the time I'm sure no one else noticed but it is a memory that has stayed with me. So when my turn came around this month I chose this book to introduce to my friends.

We had a good turnout, everyone seemed to really enjoy the book, and we had a lively discussion past our bedtime. Not bad for a 58-year-old book written by an englishman who died before any of us were born and deals with the themes of war, colonization, female empowerment, prejudice, death marches, a crucifixion, and true love. It's full of exotic locales and strong characters with a bit of history thrown in. The novel was made into a mini-series in 1981 which was shown as part of PBS's Masterpiece Theater series, and I managed to secure a worn VHS copy from our library system.

("hey! it stars that australian guy that was in Cocktail with Tom Cruise! " one of our members noted)

We watched highlights of it while enjoying our dessert of pound cake topped with mixed berries, whipped cream and vanilla bean ice cream.
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. Next month we will be reading and discussing the latest in the Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, for our October selection. (yes we read all kinds) Please join us!

and here's something else, apparently its not only girls who call each other in the morning and discuss what to wear to school that day.....

(yes, they planned this)
