Happy Veteran's Day - Let's shoot some guns!

.

Our Boy Scout troop took advantage of the four day weekend afforded by Veteran's Day and went on a camp out. Since Jack is a Webelo, and technically still a Cub Scout, Pete accompanied him with many of the other dads. The camp site was in a dry lake bed in the hills about 20 miles outside of Barstow in the Mojave desert.
Thanks to a wealthy gun nut with a son in the troop, the boys had a chance to shoot some rifles, and the dads, (including Pete) shot some handguns.

(not pictured: said gun nut shooting at a propane tank until it explodes, much to the boys delight)

One morning they took a hike in the hills above their lake bed camp site.

About half way up the "mountain" looking back down at the lake bed

The Scoutmaster had brought a pig which the boys dug a pit for:
They roasted it overnight to be ready for the final evening's meal:
Mmmmm....roasted pig! Pete ate some, but Jack only tried a bite.

These boys got off lucky this year, on a camp out a year or so ago this same Scoutmaster brought along four live chickens. He made the boys catch them, kill them, pluck them, clean them, prepare them and then eat them.

My guys came home dirty and tired but having had a great experience overall.

Happy Veteran's Day!

Bryson could not get enough of this post. "That is so awesome. He is so lucky. I want to shoot real guns. Were they real bullets?" etc.

I have been shooting once, and actually had a lot of fun once I got over my fear of holding the thing. Jack looks like a natural. Must come from your side, Heath!

That's Heth, as in Heather, not Heath as in Ledger :)

"Why so serious Carrie?"...(Heath Ledger as Joker reference)

anyway....Jack just read your comments and said "Bryson think's I'M lucky?? HE gets to live in Australia!!"

ps Pete said he heard that they shot off over two thousand dollars worth of ammo at that campout - thanks wealthy gun nut! (emphasis on nut...the guy is in our ward...)
