A few days before Christmas 2010

We hit the road for Utah early this morning, three days before Christmas.  The weather has been
nothing but rain for several days now, and we are a bit wary about our drive.  We hope its a
good sign to get out of town when the power goes out as we are packing up the car at 5 a.m.

We are delayed when a mudslide closes the toll road we take to shortcut through the hills
on our way out of town.  After a treacherous turnaround and several hours delay, we
take the long way out of town and hit the road far later than usual.

slippery slope which borders our neighborhood - one of several rainstorm
related messes that we saw today on our drive out of town

Driving the 5 to the 55, we see the most brilliant double rainbow over the Lake Forest
Irvine area.  It must have been visible all over the southland today, I heard they could
see the same rainbow in L.A.  - another good sign for our drive we hope!

We drive through rain, sometimes heavy, the whole trip up.  It is early evening
by the time we hit Vegas, and instead of taking another hour plus on the road to the
St. George condo, we decide to spend the night here.  We always pass the Castle on our
drives through Vegas and decide to make it our home away from home for tonight!

The kids (and us) are tired, but after checking into the hotel
I drag them out for a look around our portion of the Strip.
Here is a giant Jelly Belly Statue of Liberty
in the New York New York shops.

The next morning is beautiful and sunny and our Castle looks even more like
a fairy tale on our way out.  Time to hit the road for Utah!

Coming through the Virgin River Gorge just outside of St. George - the
Virgin river is full and raging, a rare sight.  There have been flooding issues
in some of the surrounding areas, but we make it just fine, and arrive in
Salt Lake later in the afternoon, ready to celebrate and enjoy the
holidays with our Utah family!
